Examination Results 2018

The Boswells School has an excellent and long standing reputation for achieving high levels of academic success. We have continued to build on this and our success has continued this year with outstanding results at all levels. 2018 was another superb year for The Boswells School with our students achieving excellent results at GCSE and exceptional results at A Level. Our results at GCSE and A Level make us one of the highest performing non selective secondary schools in Essex. Indeed, at A Level, our results make us the highest achieving comprehensive school in the county.

These results are even more impressive set against a national context of new, more challenging GCSEs and A-levels.

In the new GCSEs, 88% of all students achieved a ‘good pass’ (Grade 4+) in English (either Language or Literature or both) and 72% of students achieved a good pass in Mathematics. Both of these measures are significantly above the national averages for these subject areas, as was the percentage of students achieving a ‘strong pass (Grade 5+). We are also delighted that a number of students achieved Grade 9 in both of these subjects and that 41% of our students achieved the English Baccalaureate (compared to 24% nationally – 2017 data).

In a national context where GCSE grades are falling across the country and grade boundaries and pass marks are being pushed even higher, it is very pleasing to note that our students, once again, are bucking this trend. As well as securing such a high percentage of GCSE grades,  our Progress Measures and Value Added scores are so positive. This reflects the fact that all our students perform well above their target grades. We are a comprehensive school and our Progress Measures show that, regardless of academic ability on entry to the school, all our students perform well above the levels of progress expected.

Our A Level results were outstanding and for the second consecutive year were the best the school has ever achieved. 67% of all grades awarded were at A*-B, 93% of all grades were at A*-C and 99% of all grades awarded were pass grades in the 30 A Level subjects that the school offers. Our BTEC Level 3 results were also outstanding with no student achieving less than a ‘Distinction’: 71% achieved a Distinction* and 29% achieved a Distinction.
