Bursary Policy

The Government has announced a new bursary scheme to help 16 –19 year olds continue in full time education.  This replaces the EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance) which is being phased out and replaced by a bursary scheme.

Who is eligible for a bursary?

There are very strict criteria about the eligibility for the Bursary at The Boswells School Sixth Form, however we have set out the 3 main levels of eligibility. Please note that you can only apply for one only.

Full details of who is eligible and how to apply can be found in the Bursary Scheme Document at the bottom of this page

Level 1

Those most in need are: young people who are looked after (in care); care leavers; young people in receipt of income support (or Universal Credit) in their own name; and disabled young people in receipt of both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance (or Personal Independence Payments) can apply for a bursary of £1,200 per year. To qualify you must be aged under 19 on the 31st of August in the academic year in which you start your programme of study and a legal resident of the UK or registered asylum seeker.

Level 2

This bursary can be allocated to students who need support to overcome financial barriers that might prevent them continuing in full time education. This bursary is for students who received Free School Meals* in Year 11 and continue to be eligible for Free School Meals* in the College.  This award is likely to be in the region of £500 but the amount may depend on the level of successful applications by students as the school is given a fixed amount of money to administer the scheme.

Level 3

This level of bursary is for those students with a financial need who do not fall into the above categories.  This is a bursary of up to £200 per year. Applications must state what the identifiable financial need is and evidence must be provided to support this. The criteria for any support are that the total household income must be less than £20,000pa and that no other income is available from another household to support the student.
