Careers Guidance

The Careers Adviser works in conjunction with the Director of Sixth Form/Careers Leader, Mr Matthew Fletcher, Heads of Year and Tutors to ensure the implementation of our Careers Policy.  In October 2016 The Boswells School received re-accreditation for the Recognition of Quality Award (RoQA) for Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Award. We also achieved the Quality in Careers Standard in October 2016.  In May 2015 The Boswells School was awarded the Recognition of Quality Award in Work Related Learning.

Mrs Page is a fully qualified Careers Advisor with a Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development.  She is in school full time, offers individual, impartial Careers interviews and is always available to offer help and support to students. Careers office (B4) is located opposite Miss Noble’s office where students are welcome to pop in anytime.

The Careers Library is open at break and  lunch times and after school and is fully resourced with books, information and local college prospectuses.  There is IT access, and students can research colleges, universities, apprenticeships and job opportunities.

A careers programme is delivered through our Personal Development programme in Years 7 to 11, to encourage the students to reflect on and consider the factors involved in making decisions about their future and the options available to them.  A Work Experience programme, Mock Interviews and Careers Evening are offered for upper school students; lessons include CV advice on creation of CV, application form and covering letter.

The majority of our Sixth Form students continue on to university and expert support is available to help students make the right decision.   Full support is available to those students wishing to enter employment, gain an apprenticeship or take a gap year.  Sixth Form careers advice is available and tailored to meet the needs of individual students.

Raising the Participation Age is a government policy which increases the minimum age at which young people in England can leave learning.  It means from summer 2013 students are required to participate in education, training or employment with training until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17 and from summer 2015 onwards until their 18th birthday.
