Foreign Languages Faculty - Vision and Curriculum Overview

Our vision in the Languages Faculty is to empower all language learners with the skills and confidence to see themselves as World Citizens, ready to thrive in a multicultural and respectful global community. We aim to foster understanding of other countries and cultures, encouraging openness, adaptability, and curiosity about the wider world.

We are dedicated to developing strong, lifelong language skills and sparking a genuine interest in global cultures. This is achieved through a rich programme of cultural and extracurricular activities, including language trips to France/Spain, events and competitions, and as Language Leaders.

By nurturing a love of languages and focusing on key areas such as grammar, linguistic manipulation, and authentic materials, we prepare our students to become independent language learners. Our goal is to equip them for success in the global job market as confident, culturally aware individuals.

Pupils study either French or Spanish from Year 7.

Key Stage 3 (KS3)

Our KS3 French/Spanish curriculum is carefully balanced and sequenced to help students build the confidence and competence to communicate effectively in French/Spanish. Designed in line with the latest research in language education, the curriculum lays a strong foundation for future language learning. It prepares students for GCSE study and supports further education or career pathways where French/Spanish is an asset.

Key Stage 4 (KS4)

The KS4 Scheme of Work continues to draw from current best practices in language teaching. It offers a high level of challenge, reflecting the resilience and determination needed to master a language. Students are taught the value of regular practice and are guided through a process of modelling, recall, and application. Prior knowledge is continually revisited and extended through meaningful and contextualised tasks, ensuring that misconceptions are addressed and learning gaps are closed.

Key Stage 5 (KS5)

At A Level, the skills developed at KS4 are taken further, with additional focus on advanced capabilities such as summary writing for both reading and listening. Lessons are designed to be engaging and inspiring, cultivating a deep passion for both the French/Spanish language and Francophone/Hispanic countries. High-quality, well-planned teaching strategies ensure that every student is both supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.
