Parents and Carers: Supporting Your Child’s Future

Helping young people explore their future

Parents and carers play an important role in helping young people make informed choices about their future. Talking about interests, strengths, careers and different pathways can help your child build confidence and understand the opportunities available to them.

How you can help

You can support your child by:

Talking about their interests, strengths and aspirations.
Encouraging them to explore a wide range of careers and opportunities.
Discussing pathways including sixth form, college, apprenticeships, university, training and employment.
Encouraging them to take part in careers events, employer encounters and workplace experiences.
Helping them recognise how their subjects and skills connect to the world of work.
Encouraging an open mind and reinforcing that there is more than one route to a successful future.

Could you inspire our students?

Parents and carers are also an important part of our careers community. Your experience of the workplace could help bring careers to life for our students.

You could support us by sharing your career journey, attending a careers event, supporting mock interviews, offering a workplace visit or work experience, or talking to students about your industry.

You don't need to be an expert speaker. Simply sharing what you do, how you got there and the skills you use can provide valuable insight and inspiration.

Working together

By working together, school, families, employers and our wider community can help young people understand their options, discover new possibilities and make confident decisions about their next steps.
