Every subject plays an important role in careers education. By highlighting how curriculum learning, subject knowledge and transferable skills connect to the world of work, teachers help students understand the relevance of their learning and broaden their awareness of future opportunities.

Teachers support careers education by:

  • Highlighting careers and industries linked to their subject.
  • Making skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, leadership and critical thinking visible.
  • Using real-world examples and workplace scenarios.
  • Introducing different pathways, including college, sixth form, university, apprenticeships, training and employment.
  • Including meaningful careers links within Schemes of Work.
  • Using employers and alumni to bring curriculum learning to life.
  • Signposting relevant careers events and opportunities.

Careers across the curriculum

Careers connections can be made across every subject, from publishing and journalism in English, engineering and finance in Maths, and healthcare and research in Science, to environmental careers in Geography, heritage and law in History, and the wide range of opportunities within Art, Computing and PE.

Making skills visible

Careers education is not just about job titles. When students analyse evidence, solve problems, work collaboratively, present ideas, interpret data, undertake research or meet deadlines, they are developing valuable skills for further study, training and employment.
